Huntress mini-series promo

Artist Marcus To has shared this promo for the new Huntress mini-series (drawn by To and written by Paul Levitz) on his tumblr.

I can't wait for this series and I think To's art continues to get better and better.

James Bond news: Blofeld returns to trouble 007

The James Bond series could be taking things back to basics for the next outing. WhatCulture suggest that a possible return of Ernst Stavro Blofeld means that the criminal organisation SPECTRE (or SMERSH) are going to make a comeback.

Personally, I just presumed that Quantum were the new version of SPECTRE, but we'll see.

Here is the original article:
WhatCulture! attended a BAFTA Screenwriters lecture talk last night with Bond 23 screenwriter John Logan who hinted that a very iconic Bond villain might be ready to make his debut in the Daniel Craig series and actually his first big screen appearance since Max Von Sydow played him in Never Say Never Again 28 years ago!

Rather interestingly, during the talk last night Logan was reminded by an audience member of a quote that he said some ten years ago that, in his opinion, “Bond should always fight Blofeld”. When pressed on this he gave a wry smile and said “Bond should always fight Blofeld”.

We won’t know if Logan was leading us on a merry dance with that enigmatic response for a few months to come, but bringing back one of Bonds oldest foes may just be what the franchise needs. The character wasn’t used in the Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan 007 era and we’ve missed his devilish ways! And certainly the Craig movies have been building towards a large overarching figurehead who is the head of QUANTUM and it would be a great way for director Sam Mendes to finish off this current trilogy with Bond’s version of The Joker or Professor Moriarty.

Whilst Logan wouldn’t give away any actual plot details, he did tell us that the production has two weeks rehearsal time scheduled into it which is unheard of in the film industry these days and even more so on a big budget action movie such as the Bond franchise. This would certainly indicate that a fresh approach is being taken with the latest installment and may hopefully lead to something more exciting than 007’s last outing.

DC Comics' New 52 Weeks 1 & 2 review round up

I have chosen key titles to do full reviews of rather than try to review every title (not going to happen).
You can read the full reviews by clicking the 'Reviews' tag underneath this post.
Below are my thoughts on the books that I've managed to pick up or read in store that I won't be doing full reviews of (I'll do the same thing at the end of week 4, setting you a fortnightly review rundown).

Week 1

  • ANIMAL MAN #1

  • Dark and engaging. Animal Man looks and feels like an indie book and that works really well with the character. Excellent: 8/10
  • BATWING #1

  • The art was really pretty, but lacked much sense of storytelling or progression from panel to panel. Judd Winick's writing on the book is much better than it has been for years. Average: 5/10
  • GREEN ARROW #1

  • I like the new direction and take on Green Arrow, but the creative team really dropped the ball. Probably why they have been replaced as of issue #4. Weak: 3/10

  • JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1

  • The book doesn't really deliver on the action expected from a League book, but it was fun and the characterisation worked well. The art suited the book perfectly. Promising: 6/10

  • STATIC SHOCK #1

  • Another fun adventure that sets up things to come. McDaniel's artis back to it's best. All the bases were covered by this book. Promising: 6/10

  • STORMWATCH #1

  • A disappointing start to the series, I think that the book suffered from trying to throw everything at us at once rather than focusing on a few things and building out. Disappointing: 4/10

  • SWAMP THING #1

  •  The yin to Animal Man's yang, I was very pleased that these two books were both good. Swamp Thing unfortunately weakens the start of it's run by having Superman deliver exposition. Good: 7/10

    Week 2
  • BATMAN AND ROBIN #1

  • A book of two halves. Tomasi sets up the characters and new direction and then takes us to the action. He tells us who the characters are and then shows us. This made the book feel a litle unbalanced, however the characters are spot on. Promising: 6/10

  • BATWOMAN #1

  • The main sell for this book is the art. It is absolutely gorgeous cover to cover. The story however isn't great and I find it hard to warm to the lead character. We'll see how long I keep following it; nearly gave it a five, but the art pushes it up to a : Promising: 6/10

  • DEMON KNIGHTS #1

  • A really well paced first issue that sets up the characters and ends with a severed head thrown through a pub window. Lovely. The art is fantastic and moves the story as much as the text. Excellent: 8/10

  • LEGION LOST #1

  • A rare miss from both Fabian Nicieza and Pete Woods. Both the writing and the art seemed a bit off. There isn't anything wrong with the book, but there isn't much to get excited about either. I suspect it will read better when collected. Average: 5/10

  • RED LANTERNS #1

  • This book is everything that I feared it would be. A mess. The entire issue centres around that fact that the book has no real mission and the one they come up with at the end is weak. Dropped: 2/10

  • SUPERBOY #1

  • The big surprise of the fortnight. Scott Lobdell overcomes the first issue syndrome with eventful exposition and jumps in reality. Whilst the art could be better, I can see potential in it. Good: 7/10

    Batman: Earth One release date

The long awaited Batman: Earth One graphic novel finally has a release date!

The hardcover edition will be coming on 8th May 2012.

This is the follow up to the critically acclaimed Superman: Earth One that came out last year.
This is the blurb on amazon:
Geoff Johns, the writer of BLACKEST NIGHT, GREEN LANTERN and INFINITE CRISIS re-teams with superstar artist Gary Frank, his collaborator on SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN, SUPERMAN:BRAINIAC and SUPERMAN & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, to create this original graphic novel that gives new insight into Bruce Wayne's transformation into Batman and his first year as The Dark Knight. This follow-up to the # 1 New York Times bestseller, SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, by J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis is the latest in the series that features the industry's top writers and illustrators and their unique takes on DC's characters. It's the perfect book for new readers of graphic novels as well as longtime comic book fans.

    New title logo

After nine months of using modified images that I've borrowed from the worlds of video games and comic books for the blog's logo, I have decided that we need to strike out on our own.

The new logo represents both myself and the blog. We see nods to Batman and Star Wars, as well as to my other main activity; kung fu.

The poster isn't quite to the standard that I'd like, but I'm generally happy with it.

Let me know what you think of the site's new logo.

Stephanie Brown lives on as Spoiler

The December solicitations were released officially last night and I have to say that I'm a little surprised that no-one is flagging up the return to the DC Universe of Stephanie Brown's Spoiler.
Announced in the Batman Leviathan one-shot, Steph fills the same role that she did as Batgirl for the English boarding school mission. So presumably, the art had to be sent back and changed - whoops! It would've been easier (and cheaper) to get it out in August when it was solicited.

For those who don't know, Stephanie Brown is the daughter of D-list villian and Riddler copy-cat, The Cluemaster. She originally started out as the Spoiler purely to 'spoil' his attempts at a life of crime. She quickly became a part of Tim Drake's upporting cast in Robin as a love-interest and the two were an item for several years.

She had a brief (around six issues over 3 months) stint as Robin after Tim's dad found out his secret identity and forced him to quit, before being fired by Batman. She then inadvertantly set off a gang war which lead to her being tortured to 'death'.

It was later revealed that she had nicked off to Africa for a year or so to do missionary-style work with Dr. Leslie Thompkins. She returned, as Spoiler and became Batgirl in the wake of Batman RIP & battle for the Cowl
